This was an old, nondescript building until the late 40s, when it got a strange makeover. The treatment of the main body was ordinary enough for the time, and gave the building a muted, modern new look.

But the top floor! Glass block walls with that open corner. If you were asked to speculate who’d rented that floor, you couldn’t be faulted for saying “The California Embassy.”
