Every booming town built one of these in the 20s - a big thick office block with a ground-floor arcade. No clever shaping of the slab, no artful massing of the setbacks. Just floor upon floor upon floor with a little terra-cotta frosting.

Nevertheless, this has always been one of my favorites. It’s an original - aside from a graceless makeover of some ground-floor details in the 50s, it looks the same as the day it was built.

A postcard from the 20s - lots of sky and no other buildings, but many many cars milling around for no particular reason.
